Basic Rules
  • Before the game begins, the captains of each team must check-in with the court monitor on their court. This lets us know that both teams are ready to play.
  • Number of Players: Teams must have at least 2 players on the court to start the game. A 3-minute grace period will be allowed before a forfeit is declared (unless there was a scheduling mistake by the tournament staff). For CO-ED: There must be at least one male and one female on the court at all times.
  • Which team receives the ball first:  A coin toss prior to each game will determine which team gets the ball first. The ball must be checked in by the defense and the ball must be passed inbounds from behind the backcourt line to begin play.
  • Keeping Score: All made baskets inside the two-point arc will count as one point. All made baskets outside the two-point arc will count as two points. Games are played to 16 points and you must win by two points.
  • Game Length: The time limit for all divisions is 25 minutes.  At the end of 25 minutes, the court monitor shall call timeout.  If there is a two-point lead at this time, the leading team shall be declared the winner. If neither team has a two-point lead at the 25-minute mark, the overtime rule shall go into effect. In overtime, the leading team’s score will be used as the “target score.”  The winning team must score two more points than the “target score.”

Fouls

Who calls fouls? In the adult divisions, players will call their own fouls (more specifically, the player who was fouled will call the  foul).  Court monitors will only intervene as necessary. All youth divisions will have a referee who will call fouls.

On any non-shooting foul committed by the defense, the fouled team will have the option of taking a free throw or throw-in from behind the backcourt line. Any player on the fouled team may attempt the free throw (they do not have to be taken by the player who was fouled).

On shooting fouls and all fouls by the defense in the last two minutes, the fouled team will have the option of taking two free throws or a throw-in from behind the backcourt line. After foul shots, a change of possession will result, regardless of whether the free throw(s) is/are made or missed.  If a player is fouled on a made shot, the basket is counted and a free throw will be awarded.

Intentional Fouls: Intentional fouls are fouls that are judged by the official to not be legitimate attempts to play the ball.  An intentional foul results in one free throw and the offended teamwill retain possession of the ball and must check in the ball from behind the backcourt line.  Only a referee, court monitor or a tournament official can call an intentional foul.

Flagrant Fouls: A flagrant foul may be of a violent nature or an act which displays unacceptable behavior.  It may also involve dead ball contact or dialogue which is extreme or persistent or savage or abusive.  A flagrant foul will result in a free throw and the offended team retains possession of the ball and must check in the ball from behind the backcourt line.  The player committing the flagrant foul will be suspended from play for the rest of the game and may be expelled from the tournament.  Only a referee, court monitor or a tournament official can call a flagrant fouls.

Technical Fouls: Players shall be respectful to officials and opponents.  A technical foul shall result in one point being awarded to the opponent AND the opponent will be given the ball for a throw-in.
