ARICA TRIP 2010
Boys & Girls Club Goes to Kenya- Africa
Throughout the last year The Boys & Girls Club of Stamford’s Keystone teen members have teamed up with the YMCA of New Canaan’s teen group, and Cross Cultural Thresholds a local non-profit organization to form a cross-cultural program called LEAP(Leaders Educated As Philanthropist). The focus of this program is to teach youth more about the world they live in, about themselves, the people around them, and how each of these components work together. In learning these skills and getting our members to look at the world through a different prospective they all have realized that each of them have special talents and can positively contribute to the world around them. It was with great pride that we watched each of our members declare their individual strengths and weaknesses, and how they plan to overcome these weaknesses to accomplish more in life and help others. As the program has come to an end for this year, several of our members have the opportunity to travel to Kenya, Africa to apply these skills.
Cross Cultural Thresholds, has invited three members from our Club to participate in a service project in Kenya, Africa. While in Kenya our members will be working with children in the Kibera Slum, and will helping build a new school for these children. This trip will help our members to execute the skills they have learned over the past year and will help them to understand the historical, political, economic and spiritual issues that tie us together as one human race.
The cost of this trip is $25,000.00. We have already raised $5,500.00 and are asking for additional support in helping to give our members an experience they will never forget. As many of our members have never left the state let alone the country this trip is truly an experience of a lifetime for each of them.
The three members will be traveling with two adults from the Boys & Girls Club and will join Cross Cultural Thresholds upon arrival. Departure to Africa will be on July 2, 2010 and will be returning on July 12, 2010. As part of the journey our members will not only be helping to build a school in Africa, but will also be completely submerged in a new cultural experience including activities such as a two day African Safari and a visit to a baby elephant sanctuary.
