Our founder, Arthur George Gaston (A.G.) Gaston, was a black multimillionaire businessman in Alabama who used his money and influence in the cause of civil rights.  He was the grandson of a slave, but with a 10th-grade education, enlisted in the Army during World War I and, when he was discharged, began doing menial work for a Birmingham coal company. He had already decided he wanted to be an entrepreneur. "Start somewhere" was one of the business maxims he cited decades later, after he had amassed a fortune estimated at $30 million to $40 million. In 1967 he authored his autobiography, Green Power, which has since been out of print.

In celebration of Birmingham’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the events of 1963, the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club is proud to present the reprint of Dr. A.G. Gaston’s autobiography, Green Power: The Successful Way of Dr. A.G. Gaston. Generously sponsored by Alabama Power Company, Wells Fargo and BIG Communications, books are available for a contribution of $21.95 with proceeds benefiting A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club programs.
