2012 Willie Mac Hoops Basketball Tournaments

4th-9th Grade: March 31st and April 1st, 2012

Sophomores: March 24th and 25th, 2012

Willie Mac Hoops has been the premier state and regional youth basketball tournament for the past 16 years. Initially it started out being a South Dakota state tournament, but the tournament for the Sophomore level has become regional over the last couple of years. The tournament was named after two well-known coaches who started the tournament together with the mission to offer high quality competition, courts and referees for the youth in South Dakota, as well as promote the sport of basketball.

A few years later, George Newman from Watertown, SD took over tournament, and until recently ran the tournament. Over the last couple of years, the 4th-9th grade portion of the tournament has struggled to find consistent sites and managers, while the Sophomore tournament has increased in teams, games and quality. In 2009, the Boys & Girls Club of Brookings worked with the previous owner to take over the Willie Mac trademark and bring the tournament to the next level and reach its full potential.

Each year, 2-3 tournaments are held with the goal of having all tournaments in Brookings and potentially collaborating with another community as well. The Club feels the tournament is a perfect match to promote healthy living, sportsmanship, and teamwork – all while promoting high quality sports, facilities, refs and competition in Brookings. In addition, the Boys & Girls Club feels this is also a great event to give back to the Brookings community - a community that has given us so much support.
